On this page I will be sharing some of the challenges that I faced as an I-BEST instructor in the Phlebotomy Technician Program at Renton Technical College and how I used Open Education Resources (OER) to help overcome them or otherwise enhance the students' classroom learning experience.

Setting
The Phlebotomy Technician Program at RTC consists of 28 days of lab and theory in the classroom followed by a three-week externship at a local clinic or hospital as a student phlebotomist. The only prerequisites for the program are that you have a high school diploma (or GED), pass a moderate background check and be at least 18 years old upon completion of the program.

Notes: Great disparity among students in terms of age, work experience, life experience, allied health experience, study habits, language ability reading challenges, VAK learning styles, connection to OER and ability to make multimedia presentations

Challenge 1
Optimizing class time, by making more of the in-class activities accessible to the students outside of class time.

Our blog has become a fundamental tool for our class for everything from orientation to exam prep, to resume/cover letter authoring, job search and educational links.

Challenge2
Quia activities...

Challenge 3
Avatars for aural learners, dialogues, intonation...

Challenge 4

Challenge 5
Capturing lab activities for later study, in-class review and viewing by friends or family members wherever there is Internet access.

Files for each term are accessible by both faculty. As files lose relevance, they are left behind, so the "latest and greatest" tools and information are always at the fore.

Challenge11
